The ‘lucky colour’ that matters most this Lunar New Year: GREEN
Let’s check out the Town Council’s green initiatives for the Year of the Snake. Because sssustainable celebrations are always more auspicious, for everyone!
Festive celebrations are full of generosity and joy. There are always plenty of gifts and new things, plus an abundance of special feasts that make us grateful for elastic waistbands.
Unfortunately, these are also some of the least eco-friendly periods of the year – when we create more trash, waste more food and use up more resources.
As usual, the Town Council has set up several initiatives this Lunar New Year to help mitigate our larger carbon footprint without significantly affecting your celebrations. Let’s find out more!
Textile Recyling Bins
We throw away a LOT of textiles as we make room in our closets for new clothes, or replace curtains, upholstery and other home furnishings.
That’s why we once again added 12 temporary Textile Recycling Bins throughout our town from 2-23 January 2025. They were set up at these locations:
Buona Vista |
36 Holland Drive |
Henderson-Dawson |
61 Strathmore Avenue |
Moulmein-Cairnhill |
663 Buffalo Road |
Queenstown |
48 Strathmore Avenue 181 Stirling Road 46 Lengkok Bahru |
Radin Mas |
116 Bukit Merah Central 34 Telok Blangah Rise |
Tanjong Pagar-Tiong Bahru |
23 Jalan Membina 6 Everton Park |
These temporary bins once again augmented our permanent textile recycling bins, making it more convenient for residents to discard unwanted textiles during spring-cleaning.
This year, we received 1,662kg of textiles in our temporary bins, which were collected by our partners at Cloop to be recycled or repurposed.

Used Red Packet Collection Bins
Though their digital counterparts are steadily gaining acceptance, the giving of physical red packets remains a very entrenched part of Lunar New Year traditions. This year, residents could discard their used red packets at three locations in Our Tanjong Pagar:
– 166 Bukit Merah Central #03-3527
– 40 Cambridge Road
– 44 Holland Drive
The red packets were collected for recycling by our partners at Geneco.

Used Cooking Oil Collection Points
Some of us would have done more deep-frying than usual during this period as we made our festive treats. Whether you have used cooking oil during the festive season or any other time of the year, please don’t pour it down the drain. The oil may clog our pipes, and it would be an unnecessary waste.
Let our partners at Apeiron Bioenergy recycle them into biofuel instead! They have just installed a new collection point at Pek Kio Market & Food Centre on 23 January 2025. They also have existing collection points at Tekka Centre and Our Green Hub at 40 Cambridge Road. All three of these collection points are in operation year-round.
At Pek Kio and Tekka, you can just pour the cooled oil directly into the large red bins. At Our Green Hub, store the cooled oil in disposable plastic bottles and drop the bottles into the slot at the collection point. Let this be your ‘red packet’ to Mother Nature!

Our sustainability efforts don’t stop at the festive season. Aside from the temporary textile and red packet collection bins, our facilities for recycling and other green initiatives are available to you all year.
Visit our website for a full list of recycling facilities in our town – including specialised ones for e-waste, textiles and paper. You can also see where you can bring your own containers to buy laundry detergent so as to minimise plastic packaging; and BOUNCE Bag points where you can take or leave a reusable shopping bag for free.
We will continue to add more eco facilities throughout our town for your convenience so more and more of us can join the fight against climate change. Here’s to a greener 2025 and beyond – HUAT-AHH!
