We launched Singapore’s first-ever used cooking oil collection point for hawkers at Tekka Centre!

Working with Apeiron Bioenergy, we continue to ramp up our efforts to keep used cooking oil out of our pipes and waterways.
Besides covering great eats around our town in this food-centric issue, we feel it’s important to also acknowledge the environmental impact of our eating and cooking habits – and how we can best mitigate it.
In our last issue, we reported on the launch of Singapore’s first-ever collection point for used household cooking oil, located at 40 Cambridge Road. Our partner Apeiron Bioenergy has since been collecting and recycling this oil into biofuel.
Happily, we’re not stopping there. Working once again with Apeiron, we just launched a larger-scale used cooking oil collection point at Tekka Centre on 4 October 2024.
This collector has been custom-designed by Apeiron with these two massive 100-litre drums to handle the high volumes of oil used by the hawkers at the food centre.
For the convenience of the busy hawkers, each drum is topped with a large funnel so they can quickly pour their used oil inside. In this photo, Uncle Jackie from Apeiron demonstrates how easy it is to pour in the oil. Besides giving demos and looking awesome, Uncle Jackie is also the person who designed and fabricated this collection point. Thanks, Uncle Jackie!
Each drum is equipped with this oil level indicator. When the oil passes the red line, it’s time to empty the drum! As Apeiron checks and siphons off the oil regularly, it is unlikely to reach this level, but our Conservancy Team has agreed to keep an eye on this indicator just in case.
Should there be any major oil spillage, this emergency spill kit is mounted on the side.
Following the launch, we went stall-to-stall with the Apeiron team as they engaged with the hawkers directly. We told them about the collection point and its location, encouraged them to use it, and handed out complimentary jerry cans that they could use to store their used oil before pouring it into the collection drums.
For hawkers who frequently use very large quantities of oil, Apeiron also provides this smaller 70-litre collection drum that they can keep at their stalls for their exclusive use.
If this collection point is successful, Apeiron plans to roll them out at hawker centres across Our Tanjong Pagar as well as islandwide. Hopefully, you’ll see one at a hawker centre near you soon!
